Plans for a health and wellbeing centre for the Pewsey area which will provide a range of leisure and community facilities have moved a step closer.
The Vale Health and Wellbeing Centre will be located on the current leisure centre site providing a range of facilities for the local community area.
The centre is part of Wiltshire Council’s £80 million programme to deliver health and wellbeing centres across the county.
The new centre in Pewsey will include a large fitness suite, a new four lane 25 metre pool, a multi-purpose room available for community bookings and group exercise classes and a meeting room space for community groups and local events. These facilities complement the existing multi-use games area which is already available for bookings. The development also incorporates space for an indoor skate park where people can skateboard, scoot and BMX.
The library which is located a short distance from the new centre also provides community meeting space and a changing places facility for those with highly complex needs.
Detailed plans for the new centre have been submitted to planning. Subject to planning approval, the contract will go out to tender summer 2016 with the new centre opening in Spring 2018.
The existing leisure centre will close this September (2016) for the duration of the build programme and interim leisure provision will be provided.
John Thomson, cabinet member with responsibility for campuses said: “This is an exciting chapter for the Pewsey area as we move closer to creating this new £8 million centre, which will provide a real focal point for residents.
“I’m looking forward to seeing these locally-led plans become reality. The Pewsey centre is one of seven across the county and it will provide excellent facilities for the local area.”
Jerry Kunkler, chair of Pewsey Area Board, said: “Our residents have played a key role in shaping the facilities which will be available at the Vale Health and Wellbeing Centre. We are now keen to move forward with these plans so everyone can benefit from the opportunities this will offer both now and for future generations.”
The Vale Health and Wellbeing Centre is one of seven being provided across Wiltshire.
